Buy, build, or both — choosing your AI stack
DWG bcl-01SCALE 1:1REV.0119 Jun 2026

Every AI vendor wants you to believe their product is the answer. As a vendor-neutral partner, we don’t — because the right answer is usually a mix, and it depends on your problem, not our catalogue.

Here’s how we think about it.

Buy when the problem is common

If your need is well-served by a mature tool — transcription, general chat assistants, standard document extraction — buy it. Building a worse version of a commodity is a waste of budget. Just check the deployment and data terms before you sign.

Build when the edge is yours

The parts of your business that make you different are rarely on anyone’s roadmap. That’s where custom pays off: an agent that understands your operations, a workflow wired into systems only you run. You own it, and it compounds.

Watch the lock-in

The expensive mistake isn’t buy-vs-build — it’s getting trapped. Prefer open formats, portable data, and architectures you could migrate off. A stack you can leave is a stack you can negotiate with.

Usually: both

Most real deployments buy the commodity layer and build the differentiator on top. The skill is knowing which is which — and being honest when the honest answer costs the consultant a build.
